Clear the way for drains before winter

Landowners within the land drainage district are being asked to go with the flow and clean up drains on their property before winter sets in.
Ensuring areas around drainage infrastructure are kept clear helps prevent flooding due to blockages or debris scattering because of overflows, particularly during rainy periods. With over 150km of drainage infrastructure in the Far North its important work to keep stormwater running smoothly across the whole district.
Far North District Council require property owners to ensure clear access of both channels and access ways, with all obstructions removed, and all connections or alterations having been approved by council. For all requirements, please refer to the Land Drainage Bylaw.
We encourage landowners to engage early with the council to help identify any non-compliance issues. Once property owners believe they are compliant, they can call 0800 920 029 to book an inspection so their property can be confirmed as compliant. Landowners with any questions are also encouraged to contact council.
In accordance with the bylaw, it is the responsibility of the owner or occupier of any property to check, maintain and repair any damage to a private drain that services that property.
The council has engaged contractors to undertake clearing, and spraying of land drainage areas to minimise the affect through the wet season.
