Housing for the elderly

Far North District Council provides 144 Pensioner Housing units at 12 locations across the district. The council's Housing for the Elderly Funding Policy requires the provision of this housing is funded from rents received. It endeavours to keep rents as low as possible while providing units that are well maintained and presented.

For more information please read the Housing for the Elderly - information for tenants.

Eligibility criteria

  • Housing priority will be given to applicants 60 years old and above
  • The applicant must not be a land or property owner and the combined value of the applicant's assets must not exceed $20,000
  • The applicant must be a permanent New Zealand resident or citizen.
What if you don't meet the criteria?

If the council is unable to find an eligible tenant for one of the 144 housing units, despite all reasonable attempts, it may consider applicants who do not meet these criteria. These applicants will be on a six-month fixed term tenancy agreement and will pay market rent. At the end of the tenancy, if the council has received an application that meets its Housing for the Elderly eligibility criteria, these agreements may be reviewed and terminated.

How to apply

To make an application, please complete a Housing for the Elderly - application form.

Alternatively, you can call us on 0800 920 029 to request an application form to be emailed or posted to you.

Once completed, please return the form with supporting documents to any council service centre, or by post.

  • Applicants will be notified when their application form has been received
  • A  Property Support Officer will assess your application using the eligibility criteria

Other considerations

Some factors that may be taken into consideration when assessing an application form.

  • A health condition exists which is not compatible with the applicant's current accommodation arrangements. For example, access to suitable facilities (e.g. health providers) or a need to be close to family for support.
  • The length of time the applicant has lived in the Far North District and any affiliations they may have to preferred locations.
  • The applicant is homeless, has no fixed abode, is in emergency or transitional housing, or is currently residing in accommodation that is overcrowded, substandard or unhealthy.
  • The applicant is unable to afford private rental accommodation and has limited financial resources.
