Te Rarawa and council sign up to shared aspirations

Far North District Council has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Te Hiku-based Te Rarawa, the second agreement of this type that the council has signed with iwi.
The MoU builds on a number of similar hapū-level agreements the council has signed over the past few years.
This MoU recognises Te Rarawa as a treaty partner at an iwi level, and establishes a broader, strategic platform for collaboration that goes beyond localised or project-specific engagement.
The document, signed at Te Ahu in Kaitāia on 23 May, outlines a shared intent for ongoing collaboration and partnership. In attendance were Te Rūnanga o Te Rarawa Chair Katie Murray, CEO George Riley, Pou Tikanga Mike Te Wake, and other Iwi representatives.
Representing Te Kaunihera o Te Hiku (Far North District Council) was Kahika Moko Tepania, Group Managers and the council’s Te Hono team.
Mayor Tepania acknowledged the strong progress made by Te Rarawa and praised the foundational work led by Te Hono in building these important relationships – an initiative driven by CEO Guy Holroyd.
George Riley - Tumu Whakarae - CEO of Te Runanga o Te Rarawa said he is very pleased to sign the agreement with the Far North District Council. “We appreciate the work of councillors and staff. The opportunity to work more closely together and advance the interests of our communities is warmly welcomed. Further down the track we anticipate extending this relationship to a Mana Whakahono a Rohe agreement.”
While the MoU does not detail specific deliverables, it does signal a more formalised approach to working together, including regular hui and opportunities for joint initiatives. This has been backed by commitments to support projects of mutual benefit for the iwi and the council, including projects driven through Te Rarawa hapū and marae.
The MOU will be reviewed periodically to ensure it remains relevant and meaningful for both parties.
