    Celebrate Matariki and Puanga with Far North District Libraries

    Our libraries team warmly invites the Far North community to join Whakanuia Puanga, Whakanuia Matariki - a celestial celebration of the Māori New Year.

    Throughout June, Far North District Libraries are hosting a series of workshops across four locations to grow our collective knowledge of Matariki and Puanga.

    Thanks to funding from all three Far North Community Boards, the programme features:

    • Taonga pūoro sound scapes with Nopera Pikari
    • Maukakī weaving with Medina Koni
    • Kōrari papermaking with Reva Mendes
    • Rongoā Māori traditional healing with Jannine Pikari
    • Matariki gelli-print making with Tania Pomana

    These workshops are designed to celebrate and preserve mātauranga Māori through hands-on experience. Far North District Libraries are also running Matariki and Puanga themed after-school programmes for tamariki and rangatahi.
