Far North District Council has adopted Te Pātukurea – Kerikeri-Waipapa Spatial Plan, setting a clear, long-term framework to guide future growth and change in one of the district’s fastest-growing areas.
- Te Pātukurea - Kerikeri Waipapa spatial plan - This spatial plan was adopted 18 June 2025.
12 June 2025 - Consultation summary and Deliberations Reports now available
We’ve now completed the consultation for Te Pātukurea – Kerikeri-Waipapa Spatial Plan and want to thank everyone who took the time to provide feedback for us.
Two key documents are now available to view;
- Consultation summary report - a snapshot of what we have heard during the consultation.
- Deliberations report - a record of how feedback was considered and responded to.
These documents reflect the strong community interest in how Kerikeri and Waipapa will grow over the next 30+ years.
An update on the project will be presented at the upcoming extraordinary council meeting on Thursday 18 June 2025.
What's happened so far?
In 2024, we asked you what you thought the future of Kerikeri and Waipapa should look like.
Using your feedback, we have created a draft plan, Te Pātukurea
, which will shape how these areas grow and develop over the next 30+ years.
We then checked back in with the community in early 2025 to ask, “Have we got it right?” Feedback from that second phase of engagement helped us refine the plan further.
Here’s what we are proposing / Anei tā mātou e whakatakoto nei
Some of the key elements in the draft plan include:
- Providing for the development of townhouses, duplexes and small apartments in the centres of Kerikeri and Waipapa.
- Creating opportunities for new transport connections, parks and green spaces, and recreational and community facilities along with improvements to the health of waterways and biodiversity.
- Allowing for more commercial development in both Kerikeri and Waipapa.
- Redirecting growth into the centres of Kerikeri and Waipapa rather than in rural areas.
We’re coming to you / E tae atu ana mātou ki a koe
Thanks for coming along to the many pop-up events held across the area—we’ve loved hearing your thoughts on the draft spatial plan!
All of our events have now wrapped up.
Frequently asked questions
We've received a number of follow-up questions from community groups and potential submitters seeking further clarification on the draft spatial plan and on the process we’re following to gain feedback from the public on the draft. In response, we’ve prepared this set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to highlight where these topics are already addressed in the draft spatial plan and associated documentation. If you’ve already made a submission but would like to update or expand on it after reading these FAQs, you’re welcome to make an additional submission. The submission period was open until 22 April 2025.
