Council agrees submission on replacing Resource Management Act
Far North District Council (FNDC) is having its say on central government’s proposed replacements for the Resource Management Act.
At an Extraordinary Meeting earlier this month, elected members approved a submission on the proposed Planning Bill and Natural Environment Bill.
The bills establish a new system focused on enabling infrastructure/housing development (Planning Bill) and managing natural resources/environmental limits (Natural Environment Bill).
The council’s submission supports the bills’ overall goals to ensure there is enough land and infrastructure to support future growth and long-term investment in the district. While FNDC recognises that national consistency and oversight are important, the submission notes that decisions should also reflect the Far North’s unique population, the mix of rural and urban communities, and its vast land area and coastline.
The submission also points out that the reforms should not risk overriding local decision-making and the ability to create bespoke solutions that fit the Far North.
The submission says that for the two bills to be effective, there should be practical timeframes, alignment with overall local government reform, adequate consideration for climate adaptation, reduced cost burden, and increased central government support.
The submission also expresses support for meaningful, active partnerships with tangata whenua, including iwi and hapū, upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi) commitments and responsibilities.
FNDC has indicated it would welcome the opportunity to speak to this submission.
