Cycle trail detour in Kawakawa for Waiomio River works

Cycle trail users in Kawakawa are being diverted away from a short section of Pou Herenga Tai – Twin Coast Cycle Trail while work to improve the Waiomio riverbank gets underway from this week.

A diversion is in place for the next four weeks through the centre of Kawakawa which will reconnect cyclists and walkers quickly with the main trial. The track is scheduled to reopen on Friday 19 December in time for track users to enjoy full trail access throughout the summer holidays.

Contractors for Northland Regional Council are carrying out a full riverbank deflection and a culvert upgrade along a short section of the trail.

It is the second detour along Pou Herenga Tai – Twin Coast Cycle Trail as infrastructure upgrades are also completed in Kaikohe. You can read about that detour here.

Detour directions

The detour runs from Johnson Park Reserve in the east and Station Road in the west.

Eastbound: Turn left toward Johnson Park and head right past the caravan dump station to the bridge. Once over the bridge continue east through Kawakawa township before rejoining the trail at Station Road.

Westbound: From Station Road head through Kawakawa township on the main road. Turn left at the end of the town and cross the bridge toward Johnson Park. Follow the road and turn left past the caravan dump station. Continue along to the bowling club entrance to rejoin the trail.

Southbound: Continue over the bridge and along Old Whangae Road. At the intersection with State Highway 1, turn east through the township to connect with the trail at Johnson Park to head to Ōpua. Alternatively you can turn west to continue along to Kaikohe.
