Far North libraries booting up new tech upgrades

Faster and more reliable Wi-Fi, new Windows computers and more accessible self-service printing are now available at Far North libraries. This follows a full overhaul of public library computer systems.

The work replaced Chromebooks and Chromestations which were limited by operating on Google Chrome services. The new HP computers run Windows operating systems that allow for the installation and use of Microsoft programs e.g. Word and Excel.

Finishing touches to the tech upgrades were completed on Wednesday 31 July, making the new programmes available to all those visiting libraries.

Funding for the Microsoft software licences was supplied by the FNDC Smart District programme. This aims to provide communities with access to free Wi-Fi and computers to help customers build their digital skills and knowledge.

The new system also provides self-service printing options to make printing, copying, and scanning easier than ever. Customers can release print jobs by using their library card or guest pass, a librarian will support customers by loading credit and showing how to navigate and release jobs in the new systems.

Customers can also email their print requests directly to librarians at farnorth@monitorlibrary.com. This allows for printing directly from mobile devices, which can be released by librarians through a job ID sent through to the customer’s email.
