Cycle trail detours lift in time for summer break
Two detours of separate short sections of Pou Herenga Tai – Twin Coast Cycle Trail have lifted in time for trail users to enjoy the popular tourist attraction throughout the summer holidays – one permanently.
Kaikohe cycle trail detour
In Kaikohe, track users have been diverted away from a 700m section of trail since mid-November. The detour is required to avoid construction work which is part of an upgrade of Kaikohe’s wastewater system. The project will enable future housing growth in the town. You can find out more about the project here.
From Monday 5 January the detour will be back in place for a further three months while upgrade works continue.
When in place, the detour stretches between the State Highway 12 trail entrance in the north and the Station Road entrance in the south. Trail users can reconnect to the cycle trail via a short detour through Kaikohe’s streets.
This section of track is expected to have the detour lifted permanently at the end of March. Information about this detour is available here.
Kawakawa cycle trail detour
In Kawakawa, riverbank deflection and culvert upgrade works along a short section of the trail have been completed by contractors for Northland Regional Council.
The detour, which started in mid-November and ran from Johnson Park Reserve in the east and Station Road in the west, is now permanently lifted.
