Policy update confirms approach to rates relief

Clearer guidance, recognition of Māori land, and reduced administration are among the amendments adopted in the Rating Relief Policy 2025, which sets out how the council provides rates remission and postponement.
The amended policy, which was adopted by the council at its 25 September 2025 meeting, ensures the council continues to meet its legal obligations under the Local Government Act 2002 while providing practical support to ratepayers. It helps those experiencing financial hardship, including senior citizens on fixed incomes, and recognises the important role of charitable and community organisations.
Feedback from the consultation showed a mix of views. Many supported the amendments for improving clarity, recognising Māori land, and reducing administrative effort. Others raised concerns about affordability, fairness, accessibility, and how rates are used. While these views were acknowledged, no further amendments were recommended as the policy must meet specific statutory requirements, including provisions for remission and postponement of rates and recognition of Māori Freehold Land.
The Rating Relief Policy 2025 is in effect and can be read in full on the council’s website here.
