Lease renewal keeps Kohukohu Bowling Club rolling into the future

Kohukohu Bowling Club has been granted a new lease over the recreation reserve it has called home since 1958, following approval at the council’s September council meeting.
Public consultation on the proposed ground lease ran for four weeks earlier this year from 27 June, with 81 submissions received. Of those, 77 supported the lease, two opposed and two were unsure. The Kaikohe-Hokianga Community Board also recommended the lease be granted after reviewing the proposal on 5 September 2025.
The club has been part of the Hokianga community for more than 65 years, hosting generations of families for sport and events. Its facilities are also used for hosting of annual Anzac Day and Armistice Day commemorations, by local groups such as Hau Ora Hokianga and are made available free of charge each year to BreastScreen Aotearoa.
The approved 30-year lease covers the reserve at 22 Beach Road, Kohukohu, and is divided into three 10-year terms. This structure allows the council and the club to review the agreement every decade to ensure it continues to meet the needs of the council and community. With membership continuing to grow, the club remains a valued part of the community.
