Project background
The Kerikeri Service Centre has been based on the ground floor of the John Butler Centre since 2016.
The decision to move to the Procter Library is part of wider efforts to save money for ratepayers but also reflects the changing workplace.
We estimate this move will save the ratepayer around $250,000 over five years and enable services to operate at maximum value.
Libraries are now much more than book lenders – they are community hubs that offer an ever-growing suite of services and activities, so incorporating the service centre into the library will enhance services. There are no plans to cut staff, instead the change will maximise resourcing and support the operation of busy libraries while maintaining critical service centre functions.
Some internal work will be carried out at Procter Library to accommodate the service centre.
What will the changes to Procter Library look like?
The front counter will change and the area around the current counter area will be opened up to increase public space in the lower floor. Two meeting rooms will be added, and the customer returns and self-checkout area will be altered to make it easier for customers. Our upstairs office space will be expanded.
Where is the money coming from to make these changes?
Works to reshape Procter Library will be undertaken using renewal funds already allocated to this building. No new budget is required.
