Rain brings good news for Kawakawa and Moerewa

Tropical Cyclone Tam is delivering a healthy dose of rain to the Far North this week, which in turn is bringing good news for Kawakawa and Moerewa. Water restrictions there will move from Level 3 back to Level 2 as of today (Thursday 17 April). The level of the Tirohanga Stream, which supplies both towns, has stabilised after rainfall in recent weeks has seen the water source bounce back from a dry summer.
Level 2 restrictions ban the use of outdoor sprinklers and irrigation systems and remain in place in Kaikohe, Kaitāia, Ōkaihau, Kerikeri-Waipapa and Paihia-Ōpua-Waitangi.
Level 3 restrictions in Ōpononi-Ōmāpere and Ōmanaia-Rāwene will remain due to the sensitive water sources that supply these towns still being vulnerable to dramatic falls once rain eases. Water treatment plants in the Hokianga are also continuing to operate at near capacity. Level 3 restrictions ban the use of hoses, outdoor sprinklers and irrigation systems.
A recent rain event, dubbed an ‘atmospheric river’ by Taihoro Nukurangi National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), did bring several days of rain to many parts of the Far North. However, heavy rains associated with Tropical Cyclone Tam have done much to replenished water sources following months of high temperatures and dry conditions.
NIWA is predicting the next 35 days will be wetter than normal, especially around the northern part of the east coast. The council’s Water Shortage Management Committee continues to meet on a weekly basis to monitor water supplies, and council contractors continue to fix water leaks reported across the district.
All Far North residents and visitors are asked to continue using water sensibly and to report any water leaks by calling 0800 920 029.
