For many in the Far North, a lack of public transport, long distances and increasing costs makes travelling to a job a huge challenge.
The Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs has used funds received from central government to help orchard workers get to work safely and on time.
Kaimahi North is an employment initiative set up by orchard owner Louise Peters to enable workers from around the district to work in the horticulture industry. By using funds towards the purchase of a 12-seater van, Louise and other orchard managers can ensure their willing workforce can get to and from mahi safely and cheaply, while they get the skilled workers they need throughout the year.
