Four Far North towns return to Level 1 water restrictions
Water restrictions in the Far North are easing from today (Monday 28 April).
Four Far North towns returning to Level 1 from Level 2 water restrictions are Kerikeri-Waipapa, Kaitāia, Kaikohe and Ōkaihau. Level 1 asks customers to use water sensibly.
Remaining on Level 2 restrictions are Paihia-Ōpua-Waitangi and Kawakawa-Moerewa. Level 2 restrictions ban the use of outdoor sprinklers and irrigation systems.
Level 2 restrictions will also apply in Ōpononi-Ōmāpere and Ōmanaia-Rāwene as of today. These towns have been at Level 3 restrictions since mid-January. Water treatment plants in the Hokianga have operated at near capacity since the start of summer in late 2024 and the towns have come close to having Level 4 restrictions applied. Level 4 is the highest restriction level and limits customers to essential water use only for cooking, drinking and washing.
The water sources that supply Ōpononi-Ōmāpere and Ōmanaia-Rāwene are vulnerable to dramatic falls once rain eases. Several rain events in recent weeks, including ex-tropical Cyclone Tam, have brought heavy downpours. While this does boost water levels, the high volume of rain has resulted in water sources being flooded, creating some water quality issues. For this reason, water restrictions remain in place for now, to allow water treatment to keep pace with demand.
The council’s Water Shortage Management Committee will continue to meet weekly to monitor our precious water sources and all Far North residents and visitors are urged continue reporting any water leaks by calling 0800 920 029.
