Board supports group’s Tangonge domain lease proposal
Te Hiku Community Board has recommended that the Kaitāia community group Aupōuri Ngāti Kahu Te Rarawa Trust (ANT Trust) be given a new 30-year ground lease over Tangonge Domain Recreation Reserve.

Te Hiku Community Board has recommended that the Kaitāia community group Aupōuri Ngāti Kahu Te Rarawa Trust (ANT Trust) be given a new 30-year ground lease over Tangonge Domain Recreation Reserve.
This recommendation followed a month-long public consultation held late last year on a proposal to extend the trust’s existing lease. Under the Reserves Act, the council must notify the public of any proposal to lease a Recreation Reserve and seek feedback before it makes a decision. Of the 91 submissions received, 86 supported the proposal to grant the lease to the trust.
Since beginning its lease of the reserve in 2018, ANT Trust has made significant improvements to the domain, including drainage work, grading, field grassing, and rubbish removal. The trust has also developed a community-influenced concept plan, which includes a children's playground, basketball court, exercise stations, a food forest, pou whenua, and building enhancements. By securing a new 30-year ground lease, the trust hopes to attract support and the funding required to bring this vision to life.
ANT Trust will continue to be responsible for all maintenance of the grounds and an existing building on the reserve.
The board’s recommendation to grant the lease will be considered at the next council meeting, scheduled for Thursday 8 February.
