Five members of a hearings panel began taking verbal submissions at council Chambers in Kaikohe today on the council’s Proposed District Plan – the first of 20 hearings set to run over the next 18 months.

The District Plan affects all landowners and residents in the Far North by providing strategic direction and rules about where certain activities can occur, as well as controlling how land can be used, developed and subdivided. The council is reviewing the current District Plan and has proposed an updated version.

The process of adopting a new, or Proposed District Plan (PDP), includes written submissions giving landowners, the wider community, tangata whenua and stakeholders a chance to tell the council what they think of proposed changes. Submitters can also speak directly to the Hearings Panel on their submission. Council staff and external experts review these submissions and make recommendations to the Hearings Panel. Each hearing will cover a different specialist topic.

To find out more about the PDP, submissions on the plan, and the hearings, go to the council’s Proposed District Plan webpage.
