New investment puts cycle trail on the right track

Pou Herenga Tai – Twin Coast Cycle Trail is gearing up for a $3 million upgrade, with new investment set to put more pedal power behind the popular Northland trail.

The Government is contributing $1 million through the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, with Far North District Council contributing a further $2 million alongside its previous investment in the trail.

The funding will support improvements to trail infrastructure and visitor facilities, better connections to the Bay of Islands, greater accessibility, and new cultural and tourism experiences.

The first stage will get the project rolling with construction of a new section between Ōpua and the Whangae Tunnel. The route will provide an alternative cycling connection as the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway is reinstated. Cyclists will still be able to enjoy the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway service on sections of the route while future stages of the project are considered.

The investment will also help bring the stories of Northland to life through new interpretation and storytelling experiences along the trail. Visitors will have more opportunities to discover the people, places, and events that have shaped the region.

Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston said the investment will help the trail attract more domestic and international visitors while supporting local businesses and jobs.

“Cycle tourism continues to be an important contributor to regional economies, and it helps spread the benefit of tourism to more communities,” she says.

The trail is estimated to contribute $22.8 million to Northland’s economy each year. The council’s investment will support improvements that benefit visitors while strengthening connections between communities along the trail and creating opportunities for local businesses.

Construction is expected to begin this financial year once the final trail design and implementation plan have been completed.
