Dog reg campaign adds free Doggone service this year

A new look dog registration campaign launches today (Tuesday 16 June) with fresh faces and a new free service available to owners who opt in to Doggone when registering their dogs.

The campaign raises awareness that owners who pay their dog registration between 1 July and 31 August will get the cheapest rates and go into the draw to win one of 10 prize packs.

Doggone is a system that reunites lost dogs with their owners for free. Owners opting into the service will get a tag with a unique number. If a missing dog is found, that number can be texted to 4133 to quickly reunite it with its owner. The service has reunited over 5000 lost pets with an average response time of two seconds.

Using the Doggone app, owners can customise the information that is shared with anyone finding their dog, so their privacy is protected. The tags are eco-friendly, made of recyclable material, and eliminate the need for annual tag replacements.

Harley, a brindle mastiff mix, is one of this year’s campaign stars and was on our Adopt-a-dog Facebook page. Harley wasn’t attracting any adoption buzz at first, but when she met Caleb, her gentle nature won him over straight away. Harley is now enjoying a fun and active life with Caleb and his family of five.

Dog registration fees help our Adopt-a-dog scheme. The scheme ensures all the steps are taken to provide well-behaved and healthy dogs for adoption. All the Adopt-a-dog pups are also registered, microchipped, de-sexed, vaccinated and parvo tested.

Golden retriever, Saga, is also starring in this year’s dog registration campaign. She’s a natural charmer who loves the limelight. When out walking with Mum, Jo, Saga’s not shy of pats from her fans and she’s happy to make cameo appearances in any of dad’s film projects too.

You’ll see posters starring Harley and Saga popping up at council service centres, isites and libraries soon. Our dog stars also feature in the Kurī karere, Doggo digest newsletter being emailed to Far North dog owners along with dog registration reminders in the coming weeks. You can also find the dog registration newsletter online in our newsletter library.

There are 10 prize packs up for grabs again this year for those registering their dogs between 1 July and 31 August. Each pack includes a refund on your dog registration plus two large bags of dog biscuits. Winners will be drawn after the promotional period has ended. Only one dog registration will be free per winner.

Owners are legally required to register their dogs and can pay at any time of the year, but the fees are higher between 1 September and 30 June 2025. All dogs must be registered from three months of age, or as soon as they come into your possession.

The dog registration campaign focuses on responsible dog ownership which includes keeping your dog under control in public spaces and avoiding situations where they could frighten or injure people or other dogs.

For registration forms, to pay online, or for more information visit our Register your dog webpage.
