Smartbin changes are underway

Far North District Council is replacing cellular network connected rubbish bins in northern and western wards with practical rubbish bins while the ‘smartbins’ are serviced, re-wrapped and prepared for redeployment.

Smartbins use sensors to detect rubbish levels and alert contractors when they need to be emptied. A built-in solar-powered compactor means the bins can take up to five times more rubbish than a standard waste bin.

Smartbins work best where there is a reliable cellular network and adequate sunlight. In some northern and western locations, particularly Ōpononi, poor mobile coverage has prevented the bins from sending alerts to contractors when they are close to full.

The northern and western smartbins are being serviced and will be moved over the coming weeks to locations where they can operate more effectively. This will help ensure the technology delivers the greatest benefit to residents and visitors.

The council will replace every smartbin removed from the northern and western wards with a practical rubbish bin better suited to local conditions. These replacement bins will be serviced regularly to help keep public spaces clean and tidy.

While this work is underway, council apologises for any inconvenience caused and appreciates the community's patience as the changes are completed.
