Supporters cheer for new citizens during moving ceremony

Around 90 supporters filled the Council Chambers in Kaikohe with applause, as 37 new citizens pledged their allegiance to King Charles and the laws of New Zealand.

Mayor Kahika Moko Tepania congratulated them during the ceremony on Monday (24 August), saying: “Not only are you becoming New Zealand citizens, you’re becoming Far North citizens as well.”

He said of the 67 cities and districts in the country, the Far North was the best place to settle. “Not only is its location beautiful, but the culture and the history is unmatched anywhere in Aotearoa New Zealand.”

Ranging in age from 10 to 81 years, the new citizens came from 18 countries, including Brazil, Sweden, Nepal, Vanuatu, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Sergei Lebedev delighted the crowd when he celebrated his citizenship by picking up a guitar and singing a Russian song from his country of origin.

Leizel Lumpayao, originally from the Philippines, said becoming a citizen was a dream come true. “It’s overwhelming. I’m just happy to be here.”

Fiona Mohr, who works at the Russell Museum, said officially becoming a Kiwi was an important milestone. “What drew me to this country was its bicultural, bilingual nature. When I came here ten years ago from Australia, I immersed myself in the culture and the heritage.”

The gathering watched a welcome video, which included a message from Her Excellency The Right Honourable Dame Cindy Kiro, Governor-General of New Zealand. Dame Cindy said, “You will join one of the most diverse populations in the world. Your skills, commitment and cultural traditions will help shape the future direction of our communities and our nation.”

The event concluded with a karakia and the singing of the national anthem.

To become a New Zealand citizen, applicants must meet several requirements. This includes living in this country as a resident for at least five years and being of good character. You can find out more on the New Zealand Government website.
