What’s next for the current Kaikohe Library building?
The new Kaikohe Library and Civic Hub project is well underway and due to open in late 2026. When it does, all services will move from the current Kaikohe Library building to the new site on the corner of Broadway and Raihara Street, leaving the Marino Place building vacant.
Before that happens, we want to hear your ideas for what the current building could become.
Here’s what we are proposing | Anei tā mātou e whakatakoto nei
We’re asking for your feedback on four possible options for the building’s future:
- keep the building and lease it for commercial or community purposes
- keep the building for other council purposes
- sell the building
- demolish the building.
You'll also have the chance to share the reason for your choice and any other ideas you have for how this space could benefit the Kaikohe community.
We’re coming to you | E tae atu ana mātou ki a koe
Throughout May, engagement materials and voting boards will be available at the Kaikohe Library, as well as onboard the mobile library van during its stops around the district.
You're also welcome to visit us at one of our pop-up sessions, kanohi ki te kanohi (face to face), to talk through the four possible options and fill out a survey. We’ll be at:
- Kaikohe Night Market on 14 May between 3pm and 5pm
- Kaikohe Night Market on 28 May between 3pm and 5pm.
How can I have a say? | E whai wāhi ai koe ki ngā kōrero?
There are several easy ways to share your thoughts:
- online:
- share your feedback by completing the online survey
- you can also add your idea to the interactive form - growing the centre of Kaikohe community
- please use the online survey or interactive form, not both.
- email: send your feedback to submissions@fndc.govt.nz
- in person: drop off a printed survey form at any FNDC service centre or library. Please include your name, address and contact details – our friendly customer service team will take care of the rest.
- by mail: post your feedback to Far North District Council, Private Bag 752, Kaikohe 0440.
Alternatively, you can request a verbal submission by emailing us at submissions@fndc.govt.nz or by phone on 0800 920 029.
Share your feedback before submissions close on Sunday 31 May 2026.
Questions and answers | Ngā pātai me ngā whakautu
The building is 58 years old and while renovated in the 2000s, it requires some investment to improve the building condition.
The boundaries of the building are outlined in orange. The scope of consultation only includes the building footprint. It does not include the area surrounding the building: public toilets, public parking, playground and green space.

Visit our growing the centre of Kaikohe community page and add your ideas to the community ideas garden by planting a flower and watering the ideas you support. This interactive submission form can be used if you are short on time, allowing you to share your thoughts without having to provide an explanation.
Please use either the interactive submission form or the online survey, not both.
We are also distributing child-friendly booklets to 24 kura, early childhood education centres (ECE) schools and kōhanga reo in the Kaikohe-Hokianga Community Board area for their feedback.
Once consultation closes, our projects team will analyse the community’s feedback and present the findings, including a recommended option, to the Kaikohe-Hokianga Community Board and Te Koukou Committee for Transport and Infrastructure. The report will then be presented to council for a final decision. We will communicate the outcome to the community and all submitters.
Please note: this is a first round of engagement to inform development of options only. Depending on the preferred option, further engagement may be required once a decision has been made by the council.
We are aiming for a council decision in September, prior to the opening of the new library in late 2026.
Yes. You’ll be able to see what the community said overall through publicly available reports available on Infocouncil before each committee and council meeting. People are also welcome to attend the committee and council meetings if interested.
You can find out more at the Kaikohe Library and Civic Hub Project page.
