Roading maintenance reports
Each week, road maintenance and improvement activities are carried out across the Far North to ensure road safety, manage wear and tear, and support community access. This work is split into two areas, Northern and Southern which are handled by our roading contactors, Fulton Hogan and Ventia. Below are the reports created by contractors along with a guide on the types of work referenced in the updates.
Roading reports
Each report includes two columns: one showing work completed last week, and one showing what’s planned for the week ahead. These updates help keep communities informed about where roading crews have been and where they’re heading.
Planned work may shift due to weather, staff, or material availability. If a road was scheduled but not completed, it will be rescheduled and noted in a future report. Activities include pothole repairs, grading, drainage, vegetation control, sealing, footpath work, and other regular maintenance.
Period | Area |

Work categories
Categories of maintenance and improvement activities regularly carried out.
Grading (unsealed roads)
Grading involves reshaping and levelling unsealed (gravel) roads using a grader to smooth out potholes, ruts, and corrugations. This helps restore a safer, more even driving surface and improves drainage.
Metalling
Metalling means applying a fresh layer of gravel to unsealed roads. This strengthens the road surface, improves durability, and reduces dust and erosion in dry or wet conditions.
Sealed pavement maintenance
Includes small-scale repairs on sealed roads, such as:
- Pothole patching
- Edge break repairs
- Crack sealing
- Localised patching
Unsealed pavement maintenance
Targeted maintenance on unsealed roads to address potholes, scouring, and surface wear. This includes reshaping small sections and applying gravel if needed to improve road usability between grading cycles.
Resurfacing/Resealing
Replacing damaged road surface with new material (asphalt/chip seal) to restore its integrity and improve its condition.
Road rehabilitation – sealed
Large-scale renewal of sealed roads that may involve removing and rebuilding damaged pavement layers, sealing, and upgrading drainage to restore long-term performance.
Road rehabilitation – unsealed
Structural improvements to gravel roads, including reshaping the road formation, adding new layers of metal, and repairing or upgrading drainage infrastructure to improve resilience.
Seal extension
The extension of sealed road into an unsealed road to reduce maintenance costs, improve safety, and improve driving conditions. This often follows full preparation of the underlying surface.
Pre-seal repairs
Surface repairs completed before resealing. These include fixing cracks, potholes, or soft spots to ensure the road is sound and ready to hold the new seal.
P1 pavement repairs
Targeted pavement restoration works to improve structural integrity before larger resurfacing or sealing programmes. Often deeper than typical patching.
Line marking
Repainting faded road lines, applying new markings, or upgrading layout for improved safety, visibility, and traffic guidance.
Drainage maintenance
Includes clearing blocked grates, kerb and channel systems, culvert markers, and minor upgrades to urban drainage features. This work prevents water from pooling on roads and reduces flood risk.
Culvert clearing
Removal of sediment, debris, and blockages from roadside culverts. This ensures that stormwater can flow freely beneath roads, protecting against washouts and damage.
Urban drainage
Maintaining town-based drainage infrastructure, including sumps, kerbs, channels, and culverts. Can include cleaning, repairing, or replacing elements.
Rural drainage
Clearing and repairing rural culverts, water tables, and roadside drains to manage stormwater and protect the structural integrity of unsealed roads.
Vegetation control
Trimming and clearing overgrown within the vegetation envelope. This improves visibility, safety, and access, especially near corners, intersections, and signage.
Spraying
Herbicide application along road edges to control weed growth, particularly around signs, barriers, and drainage features.
Overhanging vegetation
Trimming back trees or large shrubs that encroach into the road corridor or pose a safety hazard for vehicles or pedestrians.
Berm mowing
Mowing grass verges (berms) along road edges to improve visibility and maintain a tidy appearance.
Footpath maintenance
Includes repairing uneven footpaths, sweeping debris, and trimming vegetation. This work ensures safer conditions for pedestrians and improves accessibility.
Bridge maintenance
Routine upkeep of bridges including cleaning drain holes, checking railings, and conducting minor repairs to protect long-term functionality.
Minor improvements / safety upgrades
Works such as replacing edge marker posts (EMPs), straightening signs, and addressing minor safety hazards along roads.
Emergency works
Responsive tasks such as clearing fallen trees, fixing slips or flood damage, and attending to urgent hazards after storms or community reports.
Sign maintenance
Includes painting posts, cleaning or replacing sign faces, correcting angles, and clearing sightlines to ensure road signs are visible and in good condition.
